Where to from here???
Rounds 6 to 12
After trailing for 3 quarters against Kew Rovers
in Round 6, it was a case of now or never for
season 2014. Emotions were running high on
the bench as they bounced the ball to start the
last quarter - the Falcons trailing by 14 points.
It was important to strike early and Will Day
kicked a ‘spirit lifter’ to start the Falcons
machine. The boys finished all over the top of
the Rovers to run out winners by 17 points
while keeping the Rovers scoreless in the last
quarter.
2 wins, 4 loses and a 4 match losing streak
broken.
We were up against Canterbury in round 7
with the task of turning around a 55 point
hiding from round 2. The boys were sent out
with a message ‘the first boy to tackle the big
fella to the ground gets a free hot dog and
drink after the game, we prefer it if he has the
ball but will pay up even if he hasn’t’. The
intent was evident from the first bounce as the
boys were much more aggressive at the footy
than the round 2 meeting – enthusiasm was
starting to build as we came into the 3 quarter
time huddle with scores level. Another super
last quarter saw the boys run out winners by
26 points and again keep the opposition to no
score in the last quarter. 9 goals from 9
different boys was impressive.
Round 8 was the rematch against Preston at
the big Preston City Oval. Trailing by 8 points
at 3 quarter time in a very low scoring affair,
we asked the boys for a supreme effort in the
last quarter and requested a 6 goal haul.
These boys do what they are told…and
finished with 6 big ones to win by 30 points
and square the win/loss ratio at 4 all.
The Premiers were starting to warm up but
looked like they had met their match in round
9 against the 2013 runner up in Fitzroy. All
seemed lost until a Fitzroy kick out of the back
line floated over the line and out on the full to
give us one shot at victory. Sharp thinking
from Luke Kelvie saw him swiftly move into
the offending area and claim the free kick for
the Falcons. Could Luke realise every boys
dream?? What appeared to be an ugly kick off
the boot had a sea of Red, White and Blue
jumpers charging out of the goal square with
arms raised as Luke kicked a beauty to win

our 4 on the trot.

With school holidays and Victorian team duties
weakening the Citz, Beverley Hills and Kew
Comets, the Falcons played their best footy of
the year and recorded big wins against three
of the likely finalists and in doing so, kept all
three sides to no score in the last quarter.
All of a sudden we were 2 on the ladder with

a percentage of 125% and ready to make
another assault on the flag.
Round 13
Footy is a great game - as soon as you get
ahead of yourself, a swift reminder is not far
away.
We headed to Stradbroke Park full of
confidence or maybe over confidence. Footy
doesn’t just happen, you have to work hard
every week in an even competition and if
you’re not on your game, there can be trouble.
Trouble struck in the form of the Rovers
playing far more desperate footy than the
Falcons and without the big finishing burst
from the Falcons, the Rovers hung on to win

by 9 points and send us back to 3 on the
ladder.
Round 14-15
We started Round 14 against Fitzroy in a very
timid fashion and conceded the first 4 goals to
trail by 27 points at quarter time. The effort
was embarrassing and we let the boys know
at quarter time – The message got through as
a Josh Wise led Falcons piled on 12 of the
next 13 goals. We were back on track but still
3 on the ladder. Another solid performance in

Round 15 against Preston topped us off nicely
for a shot at the finals.

Some days just don’t go to plan!!
Training was strong and there was plenty of
energy building in the rooms before the game.
We won the toss and elected to kick with the
wind in the first term. Was that the first
mistake?? We deviated from our game plan of
kicking against the wind first in the regular
season – the coach would lose sleep over that
decision.
Things went pear shaped from the first
bounce, the Citz were on top early and Bart
was subbed out after injuring a calf muscle
delivering the first message. Our rotations
man, Daiman Kane, was subbed in as runner
as confusion reigned on the bench. The boys
