Estate Planning

Protecting what matters most

Estate planning isn't a morbid exercise — it's one of the most important things you can do for the people you care about. We help you ensure your assets reach the right people, in the right way, at the right time.

Most Australians don't have their estate in order

Around half of Australians don't have a valid will. Of those who do, many haven't updated it to reflect current circumstances — a new relationship, children, significant assets, or the death of a named beneficiary. The consequences for families can be severe.

Estate planning is not just about having a will. It's about making sure your whole financial picture — super, investments, insurance, property — passes to your beneficiaries in the most tax-effective and legally sound way possible.

What we cover in estate planning advice

  • Reviewing your existing estate planning documents and identifying gaps
  • Superannuation death benefits — binding vs non-binding nominations and tax implications
  • Testamentary trusts — protecting assets for vulnerable or minor beneficiaries
  • Powers of Attorney (financial and medical) for incapacity planning
  • Structuring life insurance proceeds to minimise tax and bypass the estate if needed
  • Business succession planning for self-employed clients
  • Blended family considerations — ensuring your wishes are reflected accurately
  • Minimising estate taxes and the impact of state-based stamp duty on inherited property

Superannuation and your estate

One of the most misunderstood aspects of estate planning is superannuation. Super does not automatically form part of your estate — it is distributed at the discretion of your super fund trustee, unless you have a valid Binding Death Benefit Nomination (BDBN) in place.

Without a BDBN, your super could go somewhere you never intended. We help you understand your options and put the right nominations in place.

Working with your solicitor

We work closely with estate planning solicitors to ensure your financial planning and your legal documents are aligned. We provide the financial picture; your solicitor prepares the documents. Together, we cover both sides of the equation.
