Foodie Tips for Air Travel
As I take quite a number of flights a year (beginning again as Covid is drifting) here are a few ‘tricks of the trade’ that might make your journey (and the consequences) a little more comfortable.
First things first. Personally, I consider each trip an adventure of some sort, but because I’m a realist, I know from experience that stuff happens which can get you fairly upset, if you let it.
Things like ‘weather’, ‘mechanical problems’ (the engine fell off), ‘we’re waiting for passengers from a connecting flight’ and ‘we are sourcing another aircraft’ (it’s flying in from Latvia) – you know what happens. This article supposed to be mainly about nutrition in the air – I’m working toward that right now.
Here are a few tips.
- As you ride into the airport, a positive attitude is a huge bonus.
- If it’s a short domestic flight you’ve probably been attacking the goodies in the airport lounge or café, so you really don’t need anything to eat in flight. Maybe tea or a coffee and an apple.
- Pass on the biscuits, cookies and muffins which are full of bad fats and contain three million calories. If you’re desperate, just for a couple of bites.
- Do you “need” a special meal ? On domestic flights, I just maybe nibble at what could be healthy - the rest, just look at it and wonder why it’s there
- At mealtimes, given a choice, I don’t do the chicken. Re-heated chicken is probably the NO. I case of the ‘upset tummy’ syndrome.
- On low-cost airlines, if you must purchase something, how about a juice and a mini nacho with salsa?... something vaguely healthy rather than Cola and chips.
- International flying is a different ball game. Often, the appetiser is more nutritious than the main (especially if you’re up the pointy end of the aircraft). It is not compulsory to eat everything offered to you.
- Eat all salads and vegies. Fish is light – definitely go easy on the heavy meats. Remember that your coronary arteries (which keep you heart alive) are only one-fifth the width of your little finger – there’s not much room in there. So not too much of the fatty stuff and when it comes to cheese and chocolate – a little, not a lot. Just nibble as you watch the movie and sip a lovely glass of wine if you wish.
- Don’t be stupid with alcohol. And you MUST match any glass if alcoholic beverage with a glass of water – absolutely essential if you want to arrive OK.
- Get out of your seat – often. Move stretch and take deep breaths. I even do push-ups and walk up and down the jumbo jet stairs.
- If you reach your destination in the daytime, do NOT go straight into meetings. Get out in the sunshine and take a walk or a swim. If you arrive in the evening, explore the hotel and surrounds, the have a very light meal and a good sleep…. and don’t forget to have some fun.
