The Tax Office is concerned because their analysis shows that not all lodgements were being made by the due date of 31 March for these taxpayers. With tax agents and the Tax Office working together, significant improvement in lodgement rates were made last year, however some returns were still not lodged on time. The Tax Office has advised that this year those few who do not lodge their 2007 return by 31 March 2008 will see a quick response from that office, ranging from assistance if needed through to prosecution in the courts. In February 2008 most individuals who had to pay $20,000 or more for the 2006 income year, and whose 2007 returns are yet to be lodged will receive a letter from the Tax Office advising them to make arrangements to ensure that lodgement can be made by 31 March 2008.
