Update- What happens when the mineral boom ends?

Surprisingly there are a number of similarities between Switzerland and Australia.

Both have relatively small populations given the region in which they are located, both have a very high currency and both countries have significant banking sectors but unlike Switzerland, Australian has a great deal of land and commodities.

Why is it then that even with thousands of job losses at Swiss banks their unemployment rate has fallen to less then a decade ago?

The answer is a manufacturing boom that has resulted from a focus on high quality engineering to complete against cheaper products which must be a corridor that Australia could emulate.
